All along the tour students who came out to hear Dr. B’s presentation were challenged, educated, and equipped. His presentation entitled, “The Struggle Making Abortion Safe, Legal, and Rare: A bioethics & clinical discussion on barriers to access, health care reform, and evidence-based medicine,” was a huge success in bringing students out from all sides of the abortion debate. Many students who started the evening with the stance that abortion is good healthcare left questioning this position, and several even confided after the presentation that their minds had been changed. Just to put that into perspective – for each of these med students who have decided not to refer for abortion thousands of lives will be saved. For the students who have now decided not perform abortions in their future practice that is 10,000 plus lives saved!

The MedSFL team wants to extend Dr. B our warmest thanks for graciously giving of his time and talents, sometimes driving through the night, oftentimes speaking at multiple campuses in one day, and joining us at all 27-stops on this tour. While the tour reached hundreds of med and pre-med students – thousands more need to hear Dr. B’s message.

Starting a student organization can be daunting. Besides deciding when you are going to meet and what your group is going to do, universities require students to follow all sorts of rules and procedures before a group can gain official recognition. And once your group is up and running, you will need money to plan events, host speakers, and advance your message on campus. This memorandum from the Alliance Defense Fund (www.AllianceDefenseFund.org) addresses your rights to form and fund a student group at both public and private universities, and your rights to promote your pro-life message on campus.

Dear Students,

I am writing to let you know about our special Livestream Event that is taking place this Thursday, April 26th at 6:15pm CT/7:15pm ET at Texas A&M Health Sciences Center.

As you know Dr. John Bruchalski, M.D. (aka Dr. B) has been on the road since March on our 27-Stop Spring 2012 National Medical Students for Life Tour to speak to pro-life and pro-choice medical students about his experiences as a former abortion provider and discussing conscience protections, health care reform, and patient-center medicine for medical students and physicians.

This Thursday is Dr. B’s last stop and if you have not had a chance to see him on the tour this is your chance to watch his presentation live while he presents on, “The Struggle Making Abortion – Safe, Legal, & Rare: A bioethics & clinical discussion on the barriers to access, health care reform, and evidence based medicine.”
There are over 80 med and pre-med students already RSVP’d for this event, and it is looking to be a packed house. You will not want to miss Dr. B’s presentation and the Q&A that follows. At each stop along the tour hearts and minds have been changed and many students who came into Dr. B’s presentation abortion supporters, left questioning if abortion is truly good health care.

I invite you to log on here at 6:15pm CT/7:15pm ET, this Thursday, April 26th. If you are not able to watch the Livestream, please come back here to watch the presentation.

Please pray that Dr. Bruchalski can reach the hearts and minds of the many pro-choice medical students he will meet. If Dr. B can change just one heart of a future abortionist, tens of thousands of lives will be saved!

For Life,
Kristan Hawkins
Executive Director, Students for Life of America

Lawmakers in Minnesota are taking aim at Hospital’s “end of life care” or lack-there-of with Senate File 2238. This is an important bill as more and more evidence makes it increasingly clear that hospitals are moving away from the Hippocratic Oath and towards a Darwinian survival of the fittest method of caring for the disabled

Many hospitals have so-called “medical futility” policies regarding treatment for severely disabled newborns. A state Senate committee will hear testimony on a bill Friday morning that would require all hospitals to post and explain their policies with parents of minor children who are patients. It would also require hospitals to register those policies with the Department of Health..

Mary Kellett, a mother of a recently deceased child, Peter will be testifying at the committee hearing. She will be sharing how Peter, who had Trisomy 18, or Edwards syndrome – a condition similar to, but more severe than, Down Syndrome, suffered from discrimination while being cared for at the Hospital.

Once Peter was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 shortly after his birth, Hospital staff recommended to Mary to, “stop all treatment, wrap him up in a blanket and let him die.”

Soon after that, a female doctor confided to Mary that if she wanted to be a good mother to her other children, she, “had to let Peter go because he would be a burden to our whole family.”

When I hear stories like this, sometimes I need to remind myself that I am living in the 21st century America and not in the 1930′s Nazi Germany.

You can read more about Mary’s story by clicking here. At the end of the news story there are a number of facebook comments, many of them sharing gut-wrenching testimonies from parents of how their hosptial discriminated against their disabled child.

As I write this I am reminded that yesterday was World Down Syndrome Day. Did you know that a child in-utero who has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome has a 10% survival rate (90% are aborted)? This doesn’t mean Down Syndrome children, but any child who is diagnosed with this genetic disability.

I hope Mary and her son’s story highlights the importance of our work in the medical community and how important it is that we grow Medical Students for Life and eventually replace the anti-life mentality that has taken over so many U.S. Hospitals.

Because of Peter, Mary Kellett has founded and is the director of Prenatal Partners for Life, an organization which helps parents cope with a poor prenatal diagnosis like down syndrome. There is a page on her site that is designed to give guidance to medical professionals who are working with parents and patients who have been diagnosed with prenatal disabilities. Mary is also available to speak at any medical school. If you would like to host her, just let MedSFLA know!

Thanks for all that you do for LIFE,

As I browse through the different photos of my friends on Facebook, I couldn’t help but notice how everyone not only just smiles in their pictures, but make distinct facial expressions to broadcast their exact feelings and thoughts at the moment they were captured on camera. Which leads me to wonder, where did we learn to make those facial expressions in the first place?

According to lead study researcher Nadja Reissland, a senior lecturer at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom, it’s been found that within 24-35 weeks of gestation, the fetus is able to move his or her face. Although the babies’ facial movements are at times very minimal, parting their lips or wrinkling their nose, when connected altogether, they do not differ from the facial expressions we use to communicate to each other on a daily basis.

Photos such as these demonstrates the natural facial movements of an unborn child and how the simple evidence of life within the womb already pre-programming how we will one day appear in pictures on Facebook. Who knew we started posing for our Facebook pictures within the womb…? Maybe Mark Zuckerberg knew all along?
